Is your Passport valid?
Is your passport still in date, or about to expire? As an adult in Ireland, you can now renew your passport online. To avail of this new system, you must be aged 18 and over and not changing your name.
You should note that if you are a first-time applicant, a person changing your maiden name to a marital name, or applying for a child’s passport you need to submit applications in the normal manner using Passport Express with An Post. Please note there are varying waiting periods for your passport to be processed and returned to you. Be aware that 24 working days is 5 working weeks for First Time or Lost / Stolen / Damaged applications. We advise you to give yourself additional time to be sure you receive your passport in appropriate time before you are due to depart.
How do you apply?
A digital photograph, an email address and a debit / credit card are required to do the application online.
Ensure you have your digital photo ready to upload. This must be compatible with the website (from which you are uploading) photo guidelines, it must be a jpeg file and less than 9mb in size. There are online sources you can use to create one, such as this site. The recommended resource by the Irish Passport Office, is ‘Photo-Me’. The online application process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. The expected turnaround time is approximately two weeks or more, depending on where in the world you are living. You can also get your own photo taken and submit the image from your device.
When applying through Passport Express, you will need to fill in a paper application form, which includes specifications on photo sizes.
How much does it cost?
Whether you apply via passport express or online, the cost of the application is the same, however for the passport express via An Post, there is an additional charge of €9.50. Different types of passport applications have varying costs.
What do I do if I need an emergency passport?
In cases of “genuine emergency” you can attend your nearest Passport Office (Dublin or Cork). You can also attend for renewal applications if you are travelling within 15 days of your renewal date. You should book an appointment to ensure you avail of the service. The service is for adults and children renewing their passports. In the case of children’s passports, both parents must be present when submitting the application. There are exceptional circumstances, of which you will find in the section regarding children’s consent.
It is important to note that May – August is peak season for the passport office. You should check your travel dates (including validity which may vary in specific countries) and ensure passports applications are made well in advance to avoid any difficulties.
